The Kensington Hotel
Utopia Projects was assigned the task of renovating 600 bathrooms for The Doyle Collection's 11 four star hotels in February 2009.
Formulate a highly versatile spec, one which could roll out and adapt to meet the demands of a complex project involving 600 bathrooms in need of renovation.
Each of The Doyle Collection's luxury hotels was to be 'individually treated, utterly faithful to location and to the building in which it operates.'
The demanding brief involved bringing together and working closely with a team of talented interior designers and Europe's finest suppliers to develop a versatile spec, which proved to be central to the success of the refurbishment.
According to Terry McAleavy of designers Cunningham McLean on The Kensington Hotel project, the brief was straightforward: 'Only the best manufacturers with design-led high-end products would be considered. The aspirations of the client were apparent from day one. The bathrooms had to be something a bit special and reflect the quality and sophistication of the buildings architecture.'
Materials and manufacturers
The floor tiles were from Porcelanosa , the wall tiles were arabescato marble tiles from Italy. The taps, shower valves and bathroom furnishings were manufactured by Dornbracht. Villeroy and Boch supplied most of the other essential components with their Loop and Friends basins playing a key part, providing a solution for surface, under and inset mounting, along with their equally versatile and vast range of Subway toilets and basins. Other manufacturers involved included Geberit, Dornbracht, Hueppe and Kaldewei - a ll supplied by Utopia Projects.
The project was always going to be difficult because the building needed all of its services replaced and the architectural features brought back to their former glory. Doing this within a seven month time frame was indeed a challenge but it was achieved with the help and full cooperation of all the suppliers and contractors involved.
Terry McAleavy said of the project '...we all knew the scheme was a winner... I was delighted to be involved with the Kensington project and enjoyed enormously the dialogue and creative environment generated by my colleagues in the design team. We are all very proud of The Doyle Collection.'
The team's united talent delivered the 600 bathrooms within a tight timescale, on budget, encapsulating the brief with absolute precision and to remarkable effect. Michael Swan, Head of Global Projects, Villeroy & Boch, had this to say of Utopia Projects: 'One of the best project merchants we work with, Utopia Projects, like Villeroy & Boch are leaders in their field with a wealth of experience and know-how providing an unrivalled service.'
